Menhera (メンヘラ)* is an abbreviation of “Mental Healther”, meaning “someone who does mental health”, and refers to a subculture centered around a certain style of vent art as well as fashion featuring it. However, because of the social stigma towards mental health issues, outsiders may abuse the term in a negative context. * please refrain from adding “kei” (系, “type” suffix) as it makes the term refer to the derogatory stereotypes associated with those who are Menhera.

Art

Society assumes that, if you look good appearance-wise, there can’t possibly be anything wrong with you. The art is a cynical take on this trope that features motifs commonly associated with injury or sickness for the purpose of social commentary. It often depicts characters that might appear cute at first glance, but, at a closer look, may be in poor health, have obscure interests, or are prone to negative thoughts. The juxtaposition of the pretty visuals and the underlying dark messages is supposed to leave a greater impact at the viewer.

Fashion

Due to its sheer popularity, Menhera art also made its way into fashion, making it possible to literally wear your heart on your sleeve. The outfits center around a theme based on the featured art print, and usually consist of an oversized top, an often barely visible short bottom, medical accessories, subtle bondage gear, fishnet or printed legwear, and comfy platform shoes. An excessive amount of blush gets applied under the eyes as it is associated with translucent skin, it makes the wearer look fragile and in need of care and protection.
